Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center Selected as Business of the Year by Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce
Fredericksburg, VA, February 3, 2011 - Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center was selected as the 2011 Business of the Year award (businesses with over 15 employees) by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce at its annual gala on Friday, January 28.
In the eight months since the hospital opened, Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center has grown and developed in many arenas.
The new hospital:
- has employed nearly 500 individuals, with the majority being hired in the first six months of 2010, reflecting an annual payroll of nearly $20 million.
- will pay approximately $1.5 million in taxes annually, thereby broadening the area’s tax base and contributing to economic growth.
- obtained National Institute for Care of Hospitalized Elderly (NICHE) certification, which specifically focuses on taking care of the elderly in an acute care setting.
- was accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations one week after opening. This endorsement represents the final requirement needed by many insurance companies before a hospital is considered to be a certified provider.
- has received state approval to build a new cancer treatment center, which will include radiation therapy.
- has consistently been ranked among the top 10% of all 166 HCA hospitals for patient satisfaction.
- provided nearly $1.2 million in charity care to uninsured and underinsured patients in 2010.
- has been a Chamber of Commerce Trailblazer since 2009 and a Chamber member since early 2006.
- has amassed over 18,000 volunteer hours in just over 8 months with nearly 200 volunteers.
- added PET-CT services in the fall 2010 to their robust variety of health care services.
- supported Breast Cancer Awareness month in October by hosting “Mammos and Massages,” which attracted 175 women to the facility for their annual mammogram. The hospital now has a Nurse Navigator, who assists and coordinates care for women with breast cancer.
- hosted two blood drives since July and collected a total of 52 units of blood, potentially saving 75 or more lives in the process.
- hosted six spectacular social events and gave tours to nearly 6,000 people prior to the opening of the hospital.
The construction of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center during 2007-2010 created hundreds of jobs during a difficult economic time and improved the appeal of the region to businesses and citizens. The hospital’s construction also led to significant infrastructure improvements, including a bridge and new roads to improve traffic flow across I-95.
SRMC played a supportive role in the local community long before admitting patients by donating $100,000 to Germanna Community College for its nursing program, several thousand dollars to each of the fire and rescue squads from the City of Fredericksburg, and Caroline, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties, and awarding $2,000 to the Rappahannock United Way in honor of Doctor’s Day.
Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center’s culture of a caring, customer-oriented health care environment is defined by their slogan “Putting You First.”
About HCA Virginia
HCA Virginia is the commonwealth’s most comprehensive health system, with 13,700 employees, 13 hospital campuses and 31 outpatient centers consistently recognized for clinical excellence. In 2009, it generated $67 million in state and local taxes and provided $385 million in uncompensated care. In Central Virginia, Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center opened in June 2010 with services dedicated to women and children, orthopedic, cardiac, and 24/7 emergency care, among others. It also offers high-tech imaging, in- and outpatient surgery, and related services. In April 2010, Virginia’s Department of Certificate of Public Need (DCOPN) approved SRMC’s request to add new technology that will become part of the hospital’s comprehensive cancer treatment center. The technology includes a linear accelerator, a CT (computed tomography) unit and a PET (positron emission tomography) unit, all of which are used for radiation therapy. Spotsylvania Regional has earned the highly respected NICHE certification, which is an acute care program and helps hospitals provide exemplary geriatric care as well as the means to implement a geriatric care service line.
