Dr. Walter Zolkiwsky Named Chief Medical Officer of HCA Virginia's Northern Market
Richmond, Virginia, June 21, 2010 – Walter R. Zolkiwsky. M.D., has been appointed Chief Medical Officer for HCA Virginia’s Northern Market. Dr. Zolkiwsky will provide overall clinical leadership and oversight of the market’s medical staff, as well as overseeing quality of care, continuing medical education and credentialing.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Zolkiwsky has served as the Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Reston Hospital Center. As Northern Virginia Market CMO, he will continue to serve as a member of the Reston Hospital Center administrative team. Dr. Zolkiwsky is gaining additional responsibility at HCA Virginia’s newest hospital, Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, where he had previously been serving in an advisory capacity.
Prior to his joining Reston Hospital Center as the Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Zolkiwsky practiced family medicine in Loudoun County for 23 years, 9 of which he served as the chairman of Reston Hospital Center’s board of directors.
Dr. Zolkiwsky completed his undergraduate degree at Seton Hall University and received his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, in 1971. Following medical school, he completed his residency at the Affiliated Hospitals School of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Prior to going into private practice, he served as Post Surgeon and Chief of Clinic at A.P. Hill, Virginia and the U.S. Army Clinic at the Pentagon.
Dr. Zolkiwsky is a Diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and a Fellow of the American Institute for Healthcare Quality. He is a state advisor to the Virginia Health Quality Center, a member of the HCA Corporate Coding Compliance Committee, a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of Adventist Home Healthcare, and the Committee on Continuing Medical Education of the School of Medicine, at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Zolkiwsky and his wife, Laraine, live in Great Falls, Virginia. Their three grown sons, Mark, Robert and Geoffrey, live and work in Northern Virginia.
